The Virtuoso (2021)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Danger, deception and murder descend upon a sleepy town when a professional assassin accepts a new assignment from his enigmatic boss.

The Quartile Take

The Virtuoso is a stylized but ultimately hollow neo-noir thriller. The plot relies on familiar hitman-with-a-mystery-target tropes without adding meaningful depth, and the central puzzle resolves in a predictable, underwhelming way. Anson Mount is stoic and serviceable in the lead, while Anthony Hopkins adds some gravitas in limited screen time, keeping the acting from bottoming out. The cinematography is competent and occasionally atmospheric, suiting the noir aesthetic. However, the film offers little that distinguishes it from dozens of similar hitman thrillers, and the ending fails to deliver the payoff the setup promises.
