After the King of Far Far Away dies, Shrek and Fiona are to succede. However, Shrek wants to return to his cozy swamp and live in peace and quiet, so when he finds out there is another heir to the throne, he and Donkey set off to bring him back to rule the kingdom.
Shrek the Third is widely regarded as the weakest entry in the franchise. The plot feels thin and meandering, splitting focus between Shrek's quest to find Artie and Fiona's imprisoned princess subplot without fully committing to either. The voice acting remains competent with the returning cast, but new additions like Justin Timberlake's Artie feel underwritten. Visually the animation is polished for its era but offers nothing cinematographically distinct beyond the series' established aesthetic. Novelty is low — the film retreads familiar Shrek themes of self-acceptance and belonging without adding meaningful new dimensions, and the villain plot with Prince Charming feels recycled from the second film. The ending resolves conflicts too neatly and quickly, lacking the emotional payoff of earlier entries in the series.
