A briefcase with undisclosed contents – sought by Irish terrorists and the Russian mob – makes its way into criminals' hands. An Irish liaison assembles a squad of mercenaries, or 'ronin', and gives them the thorny task of recovering the case.
Ronin is a taut, understated thriller elevated by exceptional character work from a stellar cast — De Niro, Reno, and Skarsgård bring unusual depth to stock mercenary archetypes, earning Acting a genuine 4. The car chases through Paris and Nice are legitimately iconic setpieces, but the overall visual style is competent rather than distinctive, keeping Cinematography at 3. The MacGuffin-driven plot is functional and professionally executed but follows a well-worn heist/double-cross template without subverting it meaningfully. Novelty gets a 3 for its cold, procedural tone and authentic tradecraft detail — which is distinctive within the action genre — but it doesn't transcend its genre framework. The ending, with its ambiguous resolution of the suitcase's contents and quiet denouement, is satisfying but understated rather than memorable.
