The Quartile Take

Les Misérables (2012) adapts a beloved stage musical of a beloved novel, so Novelty is inherently limited — it is a faithful translation rather than a reimagining. The plot earns a 4 because Hugo's source material, faithfully rendered, remains sweeping and emotionally powerful across its multi-decade arc of redemption, justice, and sacrifice. Acting is uneven: Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway are outstanding but Russell Crowe's vocal limitations drag the ensemble down, landing it at 3. Tom Hooper's decision to shoot vocals live on set is cinematographically bold in concept but the aggressive close-ups and handheld work feel claustrophobic rather than visually inventive, earning a solid 3. The ending is emotionally effective and true to the source, but not surprising or transcendent beyond what audiences already know from stage productions — a respectable 3.
