Five years have passed since Hiccup and Toothless united the dragons and Vikings of Berk. Now, they spend their time charting unmapped territories. During one of their adventures, the pair discover a secret cave that houses hundreds of wild dragons -- and a mysterious dragon rider who turns out to be Hiccup's mother, Valka. Hiccup and Toothless then find themselves at the center of a battle to protect Berk from a power-hungry warrior named Drago.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 expands the world of the original with genuine ambition — the mother reveal is emotionally resonant and the stakes feel meaningfully raised. The cinematography is a genuine highlight: sweeping aerial sequences, lush dragon cave environments, and bold lighting choices push DreamWorks animation to a visual peak. The plot, while competent and emotionally earnest, leans on fairly familiar beats (villain-as-foil, reluctant hero stepping up, loss of a mentor figure), and Drago as an antagonist is underdeveloped compared to the film's other strengths. Voice acting is solid across the board without being transcendent. Novelty is limited — it follows the sequel playbook of going darker and bigger without fundamentally reimagining its world. The ending is satisfying emotionally but somewhat rushed in its resolution of the Drago threat.
