American Wedding (2003)

Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating

With high school a distant memory, Jim and Michelle are getting married — and in a hurry, since Jim's grandmother is sick and wants to see him walk down the aisle — prompting Stifler to throw the ultimate bachelor party. And Jim's dad is reliable as ever, doling out advice no one wants to hear.

The Quartile Take

American Wedding is a serviceable but diminishing third entry in the American Pie franchise. The plot is formulaic wedding-comedy territory with few surprises, largely recycling the series' gross-out gag structure. Acting is competent within the ensemble but several key cast members are absent, weakening the dynamic. Cinematography is standard studio comedy fare with no visual ambition. Novelty is low — it's a by-the-numbers sequel retreading familiar character beats and raunchy set pieces without adding anything distinctive to the franchise or the genre. The ending wraps up predictably and sentimentally in line with franchise expectations. A watchable but unremarkable chapter.
