Ray and Ken, two hit men, are in Bruges, Belgium, waiting for their next mission. While they are there they have time to think and discuss their previous assignment. When the mission is revealed to Ken, it is not what he expected.
In Bruges is a remarkably distinctive dark comedy-drama with a razor-sharp script from Martin McDonagh that balances genuine tragedy, absurdist humor, and moral philosophy with unusual skill. The plot is cleverly constructed, layering guilt and redemption beneath what appears to be a quirky tourist comedy. Farrell and Gleeson deliver career-best performances, with Gleeson in particular offering extraordinary warmth and gravitas. The film's voice is utterly singular — no other film sounds or feels quite like it. Cinematography is competent and makes good use of Bruges' medieval beauty but doesn't transcend its functional role. The ending, while tonally consistent and thematically resonant, is somewhat ambiguous in a way that satisfies intellectually more than emotionally, holding it back from full marks.
