Bachelorette (2012)

Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating

Three friends are asked to be bridesmaids at a wedding of a woman they used to ridicule back in high school.

The Quartile Take

Bachelorette arrives in the wake of Bridesmaids (2011) and feels noticeably derivative of it — mean-girl comedies about female friendships unraveling at a wedding were already well-trodden ground by 2012. The plot is thin and relies heavily on shock humor and escalating misadventures with the wedding dress, offering little narrative depth or surprise. The acting is a genuine bright spot, with Rebel Wilson, Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher, and Rebel's ensemble delivering committed, often sharp comic performances that elevate the thin material. Cinematography is workmanlike at best — functional but unmemorable, with nothing visually distinctive. The ending wraps everything up in a rushed, overly convenient manner that undercuts the messier, more honest character dynamics the film had been building. Overall a competent but forgettable entry in the genre.
