When Shao Kahn's Outworld barbarians terrorize Earthrealm, Lord Raiden is determined to put an end to the carnage once and for all. This leaves one option: a final Mortal Kombat tournament for the future of Earthrealm – win it or lose everything. Raiden's elite fighters Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, and a few new faces kick the action into overdrive as they go head-to-head with Outworld's most bloodthirsty warriors. But deep in the Netherrealm, an unspeakable scheme by the malevolent Shinnok unfolds, threatening to obliterate existence.
Battle of the Realms is a serviceable but formulaic animated sequel that hits the expected Mortal Kombat beats — martial arts tournament, graphic violence, and a world-ending villain — without adding much that distinguishes it from its predecessor or the broader franchise. The plot juggles the tournament structure with a Shinnok subplot, resulting in a rushed, unfocused narrative that struggles to balance its ensemble cast. Voice acting is competent and energetic, fitting the bombastic tone well. The animation has decent choreography for the fight sequences, with the signature gore rendered effectively, though the overall visual style remains fairly standard for mid-budget direct-to-video animation. Novelty is low — this is a by-the-numbers sequel recycling established MK lore without a distinctive creative vision. The ending attempts an epic climax but feels hurried and emotionally unearned given the compressed runtime.
