D'Artagnan, on a quest to rescue the abducted Constance, runs into the mysterious Milady de Winter again. The tension between the Catholics and the Protestants finally escalates, as the king declares war — forcing the now four musketeers into battle. But as the war goes on, they are tested physically, mentally and emotionally.
The second part of the French two-part adaptation delivers solid swashbuckling action and committed performances, particularly Eva Green's magnetic Milady who elevates the material considerably. The cinematography is competent and period-appropriate without being especially distinctive. The plot follows the source material faithfully but adds gritty, grounded realism that gives it some character, though it remains fundamentally a well-executed retread of familiar Dumas territory. The ending provides reasonable closure for the duology but doesn't transcend expectations. Novelty suffers from being another Musketeers adaptation, and while the grittier tone differentiates it somewhat, it doesn't feel singular enough to score higher.
