The Quartile Take

The Stranger (2022) is a taut Australian thriller based on the true story of the Daniel Morcombe cold case sting operation. Joel Edgerton and Sean Harris deliver exceptional, understated performances built on tension and ambiguity, making the film's acting a clear standout. The cinematography is deliberate and oppressive, using darkness, cramped spaces, and suburban mundanity to create a suffocating atmosphere. The plot is genuinely gripping — the slow-burn mechanics of the undercover operation are handled with remarkable patience and intelligence, trusting the audience to sit in discomfort. Novelty is solid but not exceptional; the undercover-sting subgenre is established, and while the execution is distinctly Australian and morally complex, it doesn't wholly reinvent the form. The ending, while authentic to the true story, is emotionally muted in a way that feels somewhat deflating cinematically — the resolution is factual rather than dramatically satisfying, which is an honest artistic choice but limits its impact as a conclusion.
