Krull (1983)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

A prince and a fellowship of companions set out to rescue his bride from a fortress of alien invaders who have arrived on their home planet.

The Quartile Take

Krull is a curious 80s genre mashup blending sword-and-sorcery fantasy with sci-fi alien invasion, giving it a certain distinctive charm and visual ambition. The cinematography features some genuinely impressive large-scale set pieces and production design for its era. However, the plot is formulaic quest-narrative with thin characterization, the acting is largely serviceable but unremarkable despite a cast including a young Liam Neeson and Robbie Coltrane, and the ending feels rushed and anticlimactic given the buildup. Its novelty lies in its unique genre fusion rather than narrative originality — it's a one-of-a-kind curio that never quite coheres into something truly memorable.
