Two young insurance corporation employees try to pretend that their murdered employer is alive by puppeteering his dead body, leading a hitman to attempt to track him down to finish him off.
Weekend at Bernie's is a genuine comedic oddity — its central conceit (two bumbling employees puppeteering their dead boss's corpse through a party weekend) is so absurd and singular that it earns a high Novelty score despite its otherwise lightweight execution. The plot is thin and episodic by design, held together by a one-joke premise that stretches credibly for only so long. The acting from Andrew McCarthy and Jonathan Silverman delivers serviceable comedic energy, elevating what could have been a disaster. Cinematography is functional beach-movie fare with little distinction. The ending fizzles rather than lands with any satisfying payoff, wrapping up the chaos without much wit or surprise.
