In an opulent vacation home, a mysterious intruder is forced to kidnap the property owners -- a wealthy CEO and his wife -- when they arrive unexpectedly.
Windfall is a slow-burn chamber thriller that never quite delivers on its premise. The three-hander setup is intriguing but the plot meanders without sufficient tension or payoff. The performances from Lily Collins, Jesse Plemons, and Jason Segel are competent but constrained by thin characterization. The cinematography has some pleasant framing within the vacation home setting but nothing distinctive. The concept of a home-invasion turned hostage standoff is familiar territory handled in a fairly by-the-numbers fashion. The ending attempts a dark twist but feels abrupt and unearned given the languid pacing that precedes it.
