Hours after the tragic death of their youngest brother in unexplained circumstances, three siblings have their lives thrown into chaos.
Athena is most remarkable for its extraordinary long-take cinematography — the opening sequence alone is among the most technically audacious action filmmaking in recent memory, earning a genuine 4. The acting is serviceable to solid, with committed performances carrying an otherwise thin script. The plot, however, is underdeveloped and relies heavily on convenient escalations and thin characterization, leaving the dramatic stakes feeling undercooked. The ending collapses somewhat, sacrificing earned emotional resolution for spectacle. Novelty is above average thanks to its bold formal ambition and raw energy, though the underlying story beats are fairly familiar.
