The comic strip detective finds his life vastly complicated when Breathless Mahoney makes advances towards him while he is trying to battle Big Boy Caprice's united mob.
Dick Tracy is visually stunning — Warren Beatty's bold primary-color palette and hyper-stylized art deco production design are genuinely exceptional, earning a rare 4 for Cinematography. The all-star cast (Pacino, Beatty, Pfeiffer, Hoffman) deliver entertaining, committed performances, particularly Pacino's deliriously over-the-top Big Boy Caprice. However, the plot is thin and episodic, more a series of set pieces than a cohesive narrative, and the climax and resolution feel rushed and underwhelming. Novelty is solid — the visual approach is distinctive and singular — but it's ultimately a comic-strip adaptation working within familiar genre conventions rather than reinventing them.
