A celebration of the universe, displaying the whole of time, from its start to its final collapse. This film examines all that occurred to prepare the world that stands before us now: science and spirit, birth and death, the grand cosmos and the minute life systems of our planet.
Terrence Malick's documentary essay on cosmic evolution is visually stunning, with breathtaking cinematography that captures both the vastness of space and the intimacy of earthly life. However, the narration-driven structure (with Cate Blanchett voicing questions to 'Mother') feels more meditative than narratively driven, which limits traditional plot and acting scores. The film shares DNA with The Tree of Life's cosmic sequences, making it feel somewhat like an extended companion piece rather than a wholly standalone vision. The ending, while poetic, doesn't deliver a definitive emotional resolution beyond the film's ambient philosophical tone.
