Four Hours at the Capitol (2021)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

The documentary is an immersive chronicle of the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, when thousands of American citizens from across the country gathered in Washington D.C. to protest the results of the 2020 presidential election, many with the intent of disrupting the certification of Joe Biden's presidency.

The Quartile Take

Four Hours at the Capitol is a well-constructed documentary that benefits enormously from the sheer volume of raw footage captured on January 6th, giving it an immersive, almost real-time quality. The storytelling is solid, weaving together perspectives from lawmakers, police officers, and rioters to create a comprehensive account of the day's events. Cinematography is largely dependent on found and crowd-sourced footage rather than artful direction, limiting its visual distinction. Acting is not applicable in the traditional sense, though interview subjects vary in their candor and impact. Novelty is moderate — it covers a singular historical event but follows fairly conventional documentary structure, and several other films have tackled the same subject. The ending, while sobering, doesn't offer particularly deep reflection or resolution beyond the events themselves.
