Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating
A raw and honest behind-the-scenes look at the iconic superstar's struggle with a life-altering illness. Serving as a love letter to her fans, this inspirational documentary highlights the music that has guided her life while also showcasing the resilience of the human spirit.
I Am: Celine Dion is a heartfelt and emotionally raw music documentary that benefits enormously from its subject's willingness to expose her vulnerability amid her battle with stiff-person syndrome. The film earns genuine emotional weight through candid, unguarded moments — particularly a harrowing seizure sequence filmed on set — that transcend typical celebrity documentaries. However, structurally it follows a well-worn music documentary template: archive footage, fan tributes, personal reminiscence, and resilience framing that feels familiar. Acting is moot in the documentary sense, but Dion's on-camera presence is authentic and compelling. Cinematography is competent and occasionally striking but rarely inventive. Novelty is constrained by how formulaic the genre approach is, despite the unique subject matter. The ending is warmly resolved but not especially surprising or artistically daring.
