When siblings Judy and Peter discover an enchanted board game that opens the door to a magical world, they unwittingly invite Alan -- an adult who's been trapped inside the game for 26 years -- into their living room. Alan's only hope for freedom is to finish the game, which proves risky as all three find themselves running from giant rhinoceroses, evil monkeys and other terrifying creatures.
Jumanji earns high marks for Novelty — its central conceit of a sentient board game that unleashes jungle chaos into the real world is memorably singular and executed with genuine imagination. The plot is serviceable adventure fare, propelled more by spectacle than depth, with character arcs that hit expected beats. Robin Williams brings charisma and heart to Alan Parrish, elevating otherwise functional performances across the cast. Cinematography is competent for a mid-90s blockbuster, with the practical-meets-early-CGI creature work holding up reasonably well in atmosphere if not fidelity. The ending, however, is the weakest link — the reset mechanic that erases consequences and restores all to a neat status quo feels like a cheat, undercutting the emotional stakes built over the film.
