Alfie (2004)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

A tale of a philosophical womanizer who is forced to question his seemingly carefree existence.

The Quartile Take

This 2004 remake of the 1966 British classic transplants Alfie to New York with Jude Law in the title role. The plot follows a predictable arc of consequence-free womanizing eventually catching up with the protagonist, offering little beyond what the original established. Jude Law is charming and committed in the role, lending the film more watchability than it might otherwise have, and the supporting cast (including Susan Sarandon and Marisa Tomei) is solid. Cinematography is competent but unremarkable for a mid-2000s romantic drama. As a remake, Novelty suffers — it neither radically reinvents the source material nor brings a distinctive enough voice to justify its existence alongside the Michael Caine original. The ending feels hollow and unearned, trying to mirror the original's introspective conclusion without the cultural weight behind it.
