The Quartile Take

Metro is a formulaic mid-90s buddy-cop action thriller that hits familiar beats without much originality. Eddie Murphy carries the film with his charisma and comedic timing, elevating the acting score above what the script deserves, but the plot is by-the-numbers — a vengeful villain, a hostage negotiator with a strained relationship, and a climactic showdown. The San Francisco setting offers some visual flair and the tram chase sequence is a highlight, but cinematography is otherwise workmanlike. The premise of a negotiator turned target has been done better elsewhere, and the villain's motivation and the film's resolution feel rushed and unsatisfying. Novelty is low as it recycles well-worn genre conventions with little distinctive voice.
