The avenging angel of Marvel Comics fame comes brilliantly to life in this searing action-adventure thriller! Dolph Lundgren stars as Frank Castle, a veteran cop who loses his entire family to a mafia car bomb. His ex-partner believes Castle survived the blast and became the Punisher, living in the sewers and exacting vigilante violence against mob bosses throughout the city. When the populace is caught in the midst of a gang war that he caused, Castle must again emerge from the shadows and save the innocent.
This late-80s low-budget Marvel adaptation is a formulaic vigilante revenge thriller that largely strips its source material of the iconic skull logo and comic-book flair. Dolph Lundgren is physically imposing but emotionally flat, and the supporting cast is serviceable at best. The Sydney-shot cinematography has a gritty, noir-ish atmosphere that gives it some visual credibility above its budget. The plot is a by-the-numbers crime-revenge setup offering little originality, and the ending resolves things competently but without any real impact or surprise. It sits firmly in the realm of generic 80s action fare — watchable for genre fans but offering nothing distinctive.
