Astronauts search for solutions to save a dying Earth by searching on Mars, only to have the mission go terribly awry.
Red Planet is a largely forgettable entry in the late-90s/early-2000s Mars exploration subgenre, arriving alongside Mission to Mars to similar underwhelming reception. The plot is derivative and predictable, recycling survival-thriller beats without meaningful tension or surprise. The ensemble cast — including Val Kilmer and Carrie-Anne Moss — is capable but given thin material, resulting in performances that feel mechanical. Cinematography achieves some decent Martian landscape visuals and atmospheric lighting, elevating it slightly above the script's level. Novelty is low; the film covers well-trodden territory in both concept and execution, offering little that distinguishes it from contemporaries. The ending is rushed and unsatisfying, failing to deliver meaningful payoff for the survival stakes it built up.
