Deep Blue Sea (1999)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Researchers on the undersea lab Aquatica have genetically altered the brains of captive sharks to develop a cure for Alzheimer's disease. But there's an unexpected side effect: the sharks got smarter, faster, and more dangerous. After a big storm damages their remote research facility, they must fight for their lives.

The Quartile Take

Deep Blue Sea is a gloriously trashy B-movie creature feature that leans into its pulpy premise with genuine energy. The plot is formulaic survival-horror with thin characterization, though the genetically enhanced shark conceit adds a fun sci-fi wrinkle. Acting is serviceable but largely forgettable, with LL Cool J providing the most memorable performance. Cinematography is competent for the genre, making solid use of the underwater facility setting and delivering some effective tension sequences. The film earns modest novelty points for its smarter-than-average sharks gimmick and for gleefully subverting genre conventions with a couple of memorably shocking kills. The ending is satisfying enough for the genre, delivering the expected confrontation with a visceral payoff.
