Angèle (2021)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Belgian pop star Angèle reflects on her life and hopes as she finds balance amid the tears, joys and loneliness of fame. Told through her own words.

The Quartile Take

A fairly standard music documentary format following a pop star's rise and personal reflections. Angèle is a compelling and genuine subject, and her candor about mental health and the pressures of fame adds emotional weight. However, the documentary doesn't break new ground in terms of structure or filmmaking approach — it follows familiar confessional doc conventions. Cinematography is competent but unremarkable. The ending provides closure but isn't particularly memorable. Novelty suffers as the music-doc genre is well-trodden territory and this entry doesn't distinguish itself formally.
