Beverly Hills Cop (1984)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

Fast-talking, quick-thinking Detroit street cop Axel Foley has bent more than a few rules and regs in his time, but when his best friend is murdered, he heads to sunny Beverly Hills to work the case like only he can.

The Quartile Take

Beverly Hills Cop thrives on Eddie Murphy's electrifying, largely improvisational performance — a genuine career-defining turn that elevates the material well above its genre peers. The fish-out-of-water Detroit cop in Beverly Hills premise is executed with infectious energy, though the plot itself is fairly standard 80s crime-comedy scaffolding. Cinematography is functional and unremarkable, typical of mid-budget 80s action fare. The ending delivers satisfying but conventional action-movie resolution — competent rather than memorable. Novelty is solid: the film's specific comedic voice and Murphy's persona make it distinctly recognizable, even if the buddy-cop framework was well-worn even then.
