One Piece Film Red (2022)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

A new adventure begins for Luffy and his crew when mysterious pop superstar Uta unveils her identity — and launches a misguided plan for world peace.

The Quartile Take

One Piece Film: Red is visually spectacular, with some of the most dynamic and vibrant animation in the franchise's theatrical run — the concert sequences and action setpieces are genuinely eye-catching and elevate the cinematography to a high mark. The music-driven concept with Uta as an idol antagonist gives it a distinctive flavor within the One Piece universe, though the plot itself relies on a fairly familiar tragic-villain redemption arc that doesn't fully capitalize on its premise. Voice performances are solid across the board, with Ado's vocal work for Uta being a genuine highlight. The ending resolves the conflict in emotionally satisfying if somewhat predictable fashion for the genre. Overall a strong fan-service entry that excels visually more than narratively.
