After a group of biologists discovers a huge network of unexplored caves in Romania and, believing it to be an undisturbed eco-system that has produced a new species, they hire the best American team of underwater cave explorers in the world. While exploring deeper into the underwater caves, a rockslide blocks their exit, and they soon discover a larger carnivorous creature has added them to its food chain.
The Cave is a competent but largely forgettable creature-horror entry that hits familiar genre beats without distinction. The plot is a generic survival setup borrowed liberally from Alien and The Descent (released around the same time), with cardboard characters serving mainly as monster fodder. Acting is serviceable at best, with no standout performances lifting the material. Cinematography is one of the film's stronger suits — the cave environments are genuinely atmospheric and the underwater sequences are technically accomplished, giving the film some visual tension. Novelty is low; despite the Romanian setting, the film feels derivative and formulaic, a by-the-numbers creature feature that adds little to the genre. The ending attempts a twist that hints at a sequel but lands as unsatisfying rather than intriguing, leaving the film on a weak note.
