Jesse becomes reunited with Willy three years after the whale's jump to freedom as the teenager tries to rescue the killer whale and other orcas from an oil spill.
Free Willy 2 is a competent but formulaic sequel that largely retreads the emotional beats of the original without adding much new. The oil spill crisis replaces the original's captivity conflict but follows the same predictable structure. Acting from the young cast and returning players is adequate but unremarkable. The Pacific Northwest scenery and orca footage provide some visual appeal, elevating cinematography modestly. Novelty is low as this is a by-the-numbers sequel recycling the human-orca bond premise. The ending resolves predictably with little tension or surprise.
