Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating
A new mother’s memories of her own youth prepare her to navigate motherhood in the increasingly challenging world that polar bears face today.
Polar Bear is a visually stunning Disney+ nature documentary with breathtaking Arctic cinematography that captures the harsh beauty of the frozen landscape. The narration-driven 'plot' follows a familiar nature doc structure—survival, motherhood, climate peril—which is competent but well-trodden territory. Acting doesn't apply in the traditional sense; the narration (James Earl Jones) is warm but unremarkable. Novelty is limited as the polar bear survival story has been told many times before, and the climate change framing, while important, is now standard for wildlife documentaries. The ending is emotionally satisfying in its quiet hopefulness without feeling forced.
