A young teenager named Mikey Walsh finds an old treasure map in his father's attic. Hoping to save their homes from demolition, Mikey and his friends Data Wang, Chunk Cohen, and Mouth Devereaux run off on a big quest to find the secret stash of Pirate One-Eyed Willie.
The Goonies earns its high Novelty score for its singular, irreplaceable energy — a raucous blend of adventure, humor, and genuine childhood stakes that feels utterly of its moment yet timeless. The ensemble of misfit kids feels authentic rather than manufactured, and the Fratellis as antagonists add real menace without overwhelming the fun. Plot is serviceable adventure-quest structure executed with gusto but no particular sophistication. Acting from the young cast is enthusiastic and charming if uneven — the kids carry it on sheer personality. Cinematography by Nick McLean is competent and functional, capturing the Oregon coast and cavern sequences adequately but without distinctive visual flair. The ending resolves warmly and satisfyingly within genre expectations, delivering emotional payoff without transcending formula.
