Hollow Man (2000)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Cocky researcher Sebastian Caine is working on a project to make living creatures invisible. Determined to achieve the ultimate breakthrough, Caine pushes his team to move to the next phase — using himself as the subject. The test is a success, but when the process can't be reversed and Caine seems doomed to future without flesh, he starts to turn increasingly dangerous.

The Quartile Take

Hollow Man squanders an intriguing premise by devolving into a predictable slasher thriller in its second half. The invisibility effects were genuinely impressive for 2000 and represent the film's strongest asset, showcasing some inventive cinematography around the invisible form. However, the plot is formulaic once Caine turns villain, following a by-the-numbers survival horror structure with little tension or surprise. Kevin Bacon gives a committed performance but is let down by a thin script that reduces his character to a generic predator, while the supporting cast is largely wasted. The invisibility concept itself isn't novel for the genre, and the film doesn't bring a distinctive voice or fresh angle to it. The ending is a tired action climax with an implausible resolution that feels obligatory rather than earned.
