So Undercover (2012)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

When the FBI hires her to go undercover at a college sorority, Molly Morris must transform herself from a tough, streetwise private investigator to a refined, sophisticated university girl to help protect the daughter of a one-time Mobster. With several suspects on her list, Molly unexpectedly discovers that not everyone is who they appear to be, including herself.

The Quartile Take

So Undercover is a fairly formulaic fish-out-of-water comedy thriller built around Miley Cyrus in a post-Hannah Montana role. The plot recycles well-worn undercover-agent-in-college tropes without much surprise, and the mystery elements are telegraphed early. Cyrus delivers a serviceable performance that shows some range, keeping the acting slightly above the genre baseline. The cinematography is functional at best — competent but unremarkable straight-to-VOD production values. Novelty is low as the premise closely echoes films like Miss Congeniality and similar undercover comedies with little distinguishing voice. The ending wraps up predictably, hitting all expected beats without subversion or particular emotional payoff.
