A young surfer enters his first contest, hoping a win will earn him respect. But an encounter with a laid-back local forces him to rethink his values.
Surf's Up distinguishes itself through its clever mockumentary format applied to an animated family film — a genuinely novel and well-executed conceit that gives it a distinctive voice few animated films share. The cinematography is exceptional for animation, with handheld-style camera movement, pseudo-documentary framing, and impressive water rendering that feels tactile and kinetic. The plot is fairly standard underdog-sports-movie fare with a predictable arc, and the ending leans into feel-good resolution without much surprise. The voice work is charming and naturalistic, aided by improv-style delivery that suits the mockumentary format, though it doesn't transcend the material. Overall a creative, underrated entry in animated cinema with strong craft ambitions.
