Great Expectations (1998)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

Loosely based on the Charles Dickens' classic novel, "Great Expectations" is a sensual tale of a young man's unforgettable passage into manhood, and the three individuals who will undeniably change his life forever. Through the surprising interactions of these vivid characters, "Great Expectations" takes a unique and contemporary look at life's great coincidences.

The Quartile Take

Alfonso Cuarón's 1998 modernization of Dickens transplants the story to Florida and New York with bold visual flair — Emmanuel Lubezki's lush cinematography is genuinely exceptional, full of saturated colors and sensual imagery that elevate the material. The contemporary reimagining gives it some novelty points, though the liberties taken with Dickens thin the narrative considerably. Ethan Hawke and Gwyneth Paltrow are watchable but neither delivers a truly memorable performance, and the supporting cast (including a wild-eyed Anne Bancroft) is uneven. The ending deflates rather than resonates, feeling rushed and emotionally unearned compared to the source material's complexity. Overall a visually striking but narratively compromised adaptation.
