Lethal Weapon 2 (1989)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

Riggs and Murtaugh are on the trail of South African diplomats using their immunity to engage in criminal activities.

The Quartile Take

Lethal Weapon 2 is a solid buddy-cop sequel that leans into the formula established by the first film. The diplomatic immunity angle gives it a fresh hook and the villains are genuinely menacing, elevating the plot above generic action fare. Gibson and Glover have terrific chemistry and their performances remain effortlessly charming, though neither is stretching dramatically. Cinematography is competent Hollywood action work — functional and polished but unremarkable. Novelty suffers as this is largely a by-the-numbers sequel amplifying what worked before rather than bringing anything truly distinctive; the core formula is recycled even if executed well. The ending delivers emotional payoff with Rika's death raising genuine stakes, though the final showdown is fairly conventional action resolution.
