The Quartile Take

The Animal Kingdom is a thoughtful French sci-fi drama that uses its mutation premise as a lens for exploring identity, family, and what it means to be human. The acting, particularly from Romain Duris as the devoted father François, is a genuine standout — grounded, emotionally complex, and anchoring a film that could easily have veered into genre excess. The plot is competent and emotionally engaging, though it follows a fairly predictable arc of parental sacrifice and adolescent self-discovery; the father-son dynamic is its strongest narrative thread. Cinematography is solid and makes good use of the forested landscape, but rarely transcends functional. Novelty is present in its humanist angle on transformation mythology and its restrained, character-first approach to sci-fi, though the core mutation-as-metaphor concept has precedents. The ending is emotionally resonant but somewhat expected given the film's trajectory, landing with feeling if not surprise.
