A Knight's Tale (2001)

Quartile rating: 8/10 · 2 ratings

William Thatcher, a knight's peasant apprentice, gets a chance at glory when the knight dies suddenly mid-tournament. Posing as a knight himself, William won't stop until he's crowned tournament champion—assuming matters of the heart don't get in the way.

The Quartile Take

A Knight's Tale earns genuine Novelty marks for its audacious anachronistic conceit — blending medieval jousting with classic rock, modern crowd chants, and a pop-culture sensibility — making it unmistakably singular in tone and execution. The Plot is a serviceable underdog sports arc elevated by charm but ultimately predictable. Acting is solid across the board with Heath Ledger bringing charismatic screen presence and Paul Bettany stealing scenes as Chaucer, though no performance transcends the material. Cinematography is functional and occasionally energetic but rarely distinguished — the tournament sequences are competent rather than visually inspired. The Ending wraps things up in a crowd-pleasing but formulaic fashion consistent with its genre.
