When the Valley of Peace is threatened, lazy Po the panda discovers his destiny as the "chosen one" and trains to become a kung fu hero, but transforming the unsleek slacker into a brave warrior won't be easy. It's up to Master Shifu and the Furious Five -- Tigress, Crane, Mantis, Viper and Monkey -- to give it a try.
Kung Fu Panda is a polished, entertaining animated film that executes its 'chosen one' premise with charm and warmth, though the plot itself is fairly conventional. The voice cast delivers solid, energetic performances without anyone being truly exceptional. Where the film genuinely shines is its cinematography and visual design — the animation blends vibrant DreamWorks color with deliberate wuxia-inspired framing, dramatic sweeping shots, and beautifully staged action sequences that rival Pixar at its best, earning a well above average mark. Novelty sits at above average: the wuxia-animation hybrid had genuine freshness in 2008 and the film executes its tone with real personality, though it doesn't transcend genre conventions entirely. The ending is satisfying and emotionally coherent but resolves predictably in line with the 'believe in yourself' arc established early on.
