Return to Space (2022)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

The inspirational rise of SpaceX as well as Elon Musk's two-decade effort to resurrect America’s space travel ambitions.

The Quartile Take

Return to Space benefits from extraordinary access and stunning launch/orbital footage that elevates its cinematography well above average for documentaries. The subject matter — SpaceX's Crew Dragon and the revival of American crewed spaceflight — is inherently compelling, though the Russo brothers lean heavily on hero-worship framing that undercuts journalistic depth. Acting is not applicable in a traditional sense, but the documentary subjects (Musk, astronauts) perform unevenly for camera, with Musk coming across as rehearsed. The narrative arc is solid but follows a familiar underdog-tech-triumph template. The ending, capturing the successful splashdown, provides genuine emotional payoff without being particularly inventive.
