RV (2006)

Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating

Climbing aboard their mammoth recreational vehicle for a cross-country road trip to the Colorado Rockies, the Munro family – led by dysfunctional patriarch, Bob – prepares for the adventure of a lifetime. But spending two weeks together in one seriously small space has a way of cramping their style.

The Quartile Take

RV is a thoroughly formulaic family road-trip comedy that offers nothing new to the genre. The plot hits every predictable beat — workaholic dad, estranged family, wacky mishaps, heartwarming reconciliation — with no surprises. Robin Williams brings his usual energetic physicality to the role and elevates the material somewhat, but the rest of the cast is largely unremarkable. Cinematography is functional at best, capturing the Rocky Mountain scenery adequately but without any real visual ambition. Novelty is extremely low — this is essentially a carbon copy of countless family vacation comedies before it, with recycled slapstick set pieces. The ending resolves exactly as expected with a tidy emotional bow that feels unearned given the thin character development throughout.
