The Roundup: No Way Out (2023)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

Detective Ma Seok-do changes his affiliation from the Geumcheon Police Station to the Metropolitan Investigation Team, in order to eradicate Japanese gangsters who enter Korea to commit heinous crimes.

The Quartile Take

The third installment in the Crime City franchise delivers exactly what fans expect: Ma Dong-seok's imposing physicality, broad comedy, and brutal action set-pieces. The plot is formulaic even by franchise standards—a new batch of foreign villains, a thin investigation thread, and little narrative surprise. Acting centers almost entirely on Ma Dong-seok's reliable screen presence, with supporting players adequate but unremarkable. Cinematography is functional K-action fare with no distinctive visual identity. Novelty is low given it treads very familiar ground for the series and the genre. The ending delivers the expected crowd-pleasing catharsis the audience comes for, which is its modest strength.
