The Quartile Take

Vidocq is a visually audacious landmark in digital cinematography — one of the first feature films shot entirely on high-definition digital video, giving it a raw, hyperstylized look that remains genuinely distinctive and striking. Its steampunk-tinged 19th-century Paris and alchemical aesthetic are inventive and ahead of their time, earning high marks for both Cinematography and Novelty. The plot, while initially intriguing with its non-linear mystery structure, is fairly convoluted without being clever enough to justify the complexity. Acting is uneven — Depardieu brings presence but the supporting cast is inconsistent. The ending disappoints by resolving its mystery in a muddled, unsatisfying fashion that undercuts the intrigue built up throughout.
