Two not-too-bright party girls reinvent themselves for their high school reunion. Armed with a borrowed Jaguar, new clothes and the story of their success as the inventors of Post-It notes, Romy and Michele descend on their alma mater, but their façade crumbles quickly.
Romy and Michele's High School Reunion is a cult comedy that succeeds on the strength of its central duo and distinct comedic voice. The plot is fairly thin and episodic, relying on a simple fish-out-of-water conceit without much structural sophistication. Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino deliver genuinely charming, committed performances that elevate the material and give the film its enduring appeal. Cinematography is functional and unremarkable, serviceable for a mid-budget comedy of its era. The film earns some Novelty points for its specific blend of deadpan absurdism, 90s fashion nostalgia, and surprisingly warm-hearted tone — the dream sequence and Post-It ruse give it a whimsical distinctiveness. The ending, with its feel-good dance sequence and personal vindication, is satisfying if predictable, landing on exactly the emotional note fans expect.
