Tango & Cash (1989)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

Ray Tango and Gabriel Cash are two successful narcotics detectives who can't stand each other. Crime lord Yves Perret, furious at the loss of income they have caused him, plots an elaborate revenge against them.

The Quartile Take

Tango & Cash is a slick but formulaic late-80s buddy cop actioner. The plot is a predictable frame-up/revenge setup with little surprise, and the ending leans heavily on over-the-top action spectacle without satisfying resolution. Stallone and Russell have genuine chemistry and commit fully to their roles, elevating the material above its script. The cinematography is competent and polished for the era but unremarkable. Novelty is low — it recycles buddy cop tropes without adding much that distinguishes it from contemporaries like Lethal Weapon, despite some campy charm.
