The tyrant Gedren seeks the total power in a world of barbarism. She raids the city Hablac and kills the keeper of a talisman that gives her great power. Red Sonja, sister of the keeper, sets out with her magic sword to overthrow Gedren.
Red Sonja is a formulaic sword-and-sorcery adventure that largely recycles Conan-era tropes with little distinction. The plot is straightforward revenge-quest fare with minimal surprises, and the screenplay offers little depth. Acting is a mixed bag — Brigitte Nielsen is stiff in the lead role, and Arnold Schwarzenegger's supporting turn is charming but not exactly nuanced. The Italian-shot cinematography has some visual flair with decent production design and location work that elevates it slightly above the genre baseline. Novelty is low — it's essentially a Conan knockoff with a female lead, following familiar beats of the sword-and-sorcery template popularized just years earlier. The ending resolves predictably with little dramatic weight or memorable payoff.
