Last Breath follows a seasoned deep-sea diver as he battles the raging elements to rescue his crewmate trapped hundreds of feet below the ocean's surface.

The Quartile Take

Last Breath is a competent survival thriller based on a remarkable true story and its documentary counterpart. The cinematography stands out as genuinely impressive, capturing the claustrophobic dread of deep-sea environments with visceral tension and striking underwater visuals. The plot follows a fairly conventional rescue-against-the-clock structure that, while gripping moment-to-moment, doesn't transcend its genre formula — the true story provides inherent drama but the scripting is workmanlike. Acting is solid across the board without being exceptional; the cast conveys believable fear and camaraderie but no performance is truly memorable. Novelty is limited since the film treads well-worn survival thriller territory and is itself an adaptation of an existing documentary, reducing its sense of freshness. The ending, while emotionally satisfying given the real-world outcome, lands predictably given audience foreknowledge of the survival, muting some dramatic impact.
