During a space voyage, four scientists are altered by cosmic rays: Reed Richards gains the ability to stretch his body; Sue Storm can become invisible; Johnny Storm controls fire; and Ben Grimm is turned into a super-strong … thing. Together, these "Fantastic Four" must now thwart the evil plans of Dr. Doom and save the world from certain destruction.
Fantastic Four (2005) is a fairly by-the-numbers superhero origin story that struggles to distinguish itself. The plot hits familiar beats without much depth or tension, and the villain Dr. Doom is underdeveloped and underutilized. The ensemble cast (Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, Michael Chiklis) delivers uneven performances — Evans is a bright spot as the Human Torch, but the script gives most characters little to work with. Cinematography is serviceable with some decent visual effects for the era, particularly the Thing's practical-suit design and the Human Torch effects, though nothing visually groundbreaking. Novelty is low — it follows the standard early-2000s superhero formula closely and feels derivative of better comic adaptations of the same period. The ending is rushed and anticlimactic, with Dr. Doom defeated too quickly and neatly. Overall a middling, forgettable entry in the genre that coasts on the source material's charm.
