In 1996, brash L.A. detective John Spartan and maniac killer Simon Phoenix are both sentenced to decades in a cryogenic prison as punishment for a rescue mission gone wrong. When Phoenix escapes 36 years later to wreak havoc on the future, Spartan is awakened to capture his nemesis the old-fashioned way.
Demolition Man is a fun, self-aware sci-fi action film with a clever satirical premise — a hyper-sanitized future society that can't handle old-school violence is a genuinely amusing conceit. The plot holds together well enough and mines solid fish-out-of-water comedy from the culture clash, but it's fairly formulaic in its action beats and resolution. Stallone and Snipes are entertaining in their roles, with Snipes clearly having a blast as Phoenix, though the performances don't transcend the genre. Cinematography is workmanlike studio action fare with little visual distinction. The ending is a by-the-numbers action climax with a predictable showdown. Novelty gets a modest boost for the satirical worldbuilding and the unusual blending of comedy and action, but it doesn't push far enough to be truly singular.
